Art Gallery and Civic Museum of Volterra

The Pinacoteca di Volterra was founded in 1868, and since 1982 it has been located in the Renaissance Palazzo Minucci Solaini. Its rooms today house an important collection of paintings that illustrate the artistic history of Volterra from the Middle Ages to the modern age, accompanied by sculptures, medals, coins and ceramics.

All the works come from Volterra, most of them were painted or sculpted for churches that were abandoned or destroyed over the centuries; others instead come from institutions that could no longer exhibit them in their premises. In this way one of the most important art collections in this area of Tuscany was created.

Today, visitors can admire many gold-background paintings from the Sienese and Florentine schools of the 14th and 15th centuries, including a wooden cross from the 14th century and the Polyptych by Taddeo di Bartolo from 1411. The Renaissance paintings are by masters such as Neri di Bicci, Benvenuto di Giovanni del Guasta, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Luca Signorelli, of whom one of his most important works is preserved: the beautiful Annunciation.

Among them stands out the Deposition by Rosso Fiorentino, painted in 1521, one of the masterpieces of Italian Mannerism, which amazes the visitor with its modernity.

The exhibition continues with the works of Pier Candido, Donato Mascagni, Antonio Sogliani and Baldassarre Franceschini.
