Archaeological Area of the Acropolis of Volterra

The evocative archaeological area of the Acropolis lies within the Parco Fiumi, the city's main green space, on the highest plateau, close to the Medicean fortress. Excavations carried out at this site have uncovered the remains of the main sanctuary complex of the ancient Etruscan city, dating back to the mid-7th century BC.

The buildings visible today date back to the construction of two large temples erected between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, surrounded by sacred enclosures equipped with large cisterns for water collection, smaller cult structures, and service areas functional to the life of the Sanctuary.

During Roman times, the sanctuary continued to serve as a sacred place, while the area was also designated for the creation of a water collection system for the city. Among these works stands the large Roman Cistern, built during the Augustan period, used as a reservoir and water supply for the lower city districts.
