Palace of the Priors
The Palace of the Priors of Volterra is the oldest public palace in Tuscany and dominates the main square of Volterra, which still today forms the heart of the city, framed by beautiful medieval buildings.
Built starting from 1208, at the will of the Municipality of Volterra, it has since been the seat of the city's main rulers and the most important municipal offices. The façade is characterised by numerous bifore windows and the presence of many coats of arms of the captains who ruled the city. Many of these are in glazed ceramics, produced at the end of the 15th century by the Della Robbia family's workshop.
Overlooking the imposing building is a tall tower, now open to the public, from which a splendid panoramic view can be enjoyed.
The Sala del Consiglio, on the first floor of the palace, is decorated on the main wall with a late 14th-century fresco depicting the Annunciation, while the walls are painted with the coats of arms of the main Volterran families and castles.
The upper floors are now dedicated to hosting temporary exhibitions.
