Roman Theatre of Volterra

The Roman Theatre of Volterra is one of the most evocative sites in the city. Dating back to the early imperial age, it was built at the request of two members of the influential Caecina family.

The cavea, arranged in a semicircle, is set against the slope of the hill and could accommodate approximately 3,500 spectators, as evidenced by its impressive dimensions (60 meters in diameter and 24 steps). The scaena, which marked the structure towards the valley, consisted of a large wall with openings and exedras, framed by columns arranged on two levels.

Behind the scaena, the three remaining arms of a portico are still visible, built in several stages: the oldest part, contemporary with the theatre, corresponds to the rear side of the stage; later, during the Claudian period (41-54 AD), the eastern and western arms were completed.

Between the mid-3rd and 4th centuries AD, a large thermal complex was built at the center of the portico, of which the lower part of the walls and some valuable mosaics have been preserved.
