Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art

The Museum of Sacred Art is located within the Church of Sant'Agostino, which underwent a refurbishment in 2017, thanks to a bequest. In addition to the original furnishings of the church, which have remained unchanged, display cases and other paintings from churches in the Volterra area have been added.

The exhibition mainly showcases works from the Cathedral of Volterra and other local churches, and it includes not only paintings but also liturgical objects such as reliquaries, furnishings, and ornaments.

Among the paintings, highlights include the Madonna in Throne with Saints John the Baptist and Bartholomew by Rosso Fiorentino, the magnificent panel depicting the Annunciation by Benvenuto di Giovanni, dated 1466, and the reliquary bust in silver and gilded copper, attributed to Antonio del Pollaiolo, representing the hermit Saint Ottaviano.

In addition to the main nave, the museum also extends to the left of the altar, where visitors can admire, among other works, a painting by the Volterran Baldassarre Franceschini depicting Saints Thomas of Villanova and Clare of Montefalco, as well as an important illuminated manuscript from the 1300s.
