Ecomuseum of Alabaster
The Ecomuseum of Alabaster was created as part of a project aimed at enhancing this unique craft that characterises Volterra.
The museum houses evidence of the processing and trade of alabaster, which for centuries formed the foundation of Volterra’s economy. The stone has been known and worked since Etruscan times, but it was only from the 18th century that a true industry emerged.
The exhibition is divided into three sections, the first of which explains the origins of alabaster and the characteristics of its processing, including a reconstruction of an old workshop where pole lathes were once used to shape the stone.
The second section recounts the history of alabaster working from Etruscan times to the modern era; here, visitors can admire Etruscan urns, medieval capitals, and vases and decorations from the 18th century to today.
The final section, instead, offers generous space to alabaster artworks and the history of design from the 20th century to the present.
